Established in 1952, Nikka Densok Co., Ltd. initially specialized in the development of high-voltage transformers, insulation resistance testers, and spark testers for electric wires.
Leveraging its core expertise in electrical technology, the company pioneered the development of high-voltage leak inspection machines — first introduced for food packaging applications in 1961, and subsequently for pharmaceutical products in the early 1970s.
These technologies were designed to meet the rigorous safety and quality standards of the food and pharmaceutical industries, representing a significant milestone in Nikka Densok’s corporate history.
This innovation established the foundation for the company’s enduring leadership in Container Closure Integrity Testing (CCIT) and non-destructive inspection technologies.

Pinhole Inspector for Pharmaceuticals
In 1972, Nikka Densok developed the first pinhole inspection system for pharmaceutical products, the HSA model, designed for infusion bottles.
This innovation, achieved in collaboration with a leading Japanese pharmaceutical company, represented a major advancement in the inspection of sterile products in Japan and further solidified Nikka Densok’s position as a pioneer in leak detection technology.
Expansion into Global Markets
In 1975, Nikka Densok developed its first glass ampoule inspection machine, which drew significant attention from major pharmaceutical companies in the United States. The machine was successfully exported to the States in 1978, marking the beginning of the company’s global presence in pharmaceutical inspection technology and further strengthening its reputation as a trusted partner in ensuring product quality and safety worldwide.
Technological Advancement in Inspection Systems
In 1980, Nikka Densok introduced the HDA model, featuring an innovative Omega-style transport system along with several other design enhancements that significantly improved conveying speed.
The system was designed to inspect both the fused and neck areas of containers, and its inspection concept later became the foundation for today’s widely recognized Annex 1 CCIT requirements for fused-seal containers.
Capable of handling 1–5 mL containers at 300 units per minute, this model delivered major advancements in both inspection quality and operational efficiency, setting a new benchmark in pharmaceutical leak inspection technology.

Innovation in Transport Systems
During the 1980s, Nikka Densok introduced a groundbreaking screw transport system, which became one of the company’s major innovations and was successfully exported to markets around the world. In 1983, the HDA-II-AS model was developed, incorporating a microprocessor-based automatic sensitivity function. This technology later became the foundation for today’s Auto Sensitivity capabilities and set the standard for PC-equipped inspection machines. These advancements further strengthened Nikka Densok’s leadership in high-performance inspection systems and contributed to the global adoption of more precise and efficient leak inspection technologies.
International Recognition Through Scientific Evaluation
In 1984, a significant milestone was reached when leading Swiss pharmaceutical companies — Roche, Ciba-Geigy, and Sandoz — purchased the high voltage leak inspection machine from Nikka Densok and commissioned an independent evaluation by Dr. Karl Thomae.
The study compared Nikka Densok’s High Voltage Leak Detection (HVLD) method with the traditional blue bath method, demonstrating that the HVLD system delivered superior efficiency and accuracy.
This publication brought international attention to Nikka Densok’s technology and led to a substantial increase in global demand for its inspection systems.

Expansion of Product Lines in the 1990s
During the 1990s, Nikka Densok significantly broadened its technology portfolio by developing a wide range of new inspection models for ampoules, BFS strips, IV bags, syringes, and vials.
Key innovations from this period included the world’s first BFS leak inspection machine, the HDI-1, the PLC-controlled HDB-II model for ampoules, the company’s first vial inspection machine, and the development of the offline HDT-1 machine.
These advancements enabled Nikka Densok to respond to the evolving needs of global pharmaceutical manufacturers and further solidified its position as a leader in leak inspection technologies.

Entering the 2000s, Nikka Densok ushered in a new era of innovation by continuously upgrading its models and introducing advanced inspection systems across its product range.
Touch-panel interfaces, Windows-based PC control systems, and 21 CFR Part 11 compliance became standard features, reflecting the growing emphasis on data integrity and operational reliability.
In 2000, Nikka Densok released a new generation of ampoule inspection machines, featuring a streamlined flat-body design and an enhanced auto-sensitivity function, capable of inspecting up to 500 ampoules per minute for 1 mL and 2 mL.


Ultimate BFS Strips Leak Inspection Machine
In 2004, Nikka Densok launched an upgraded HDI-series leak inspection system for BFS strips, representing a major advancement in high-voltage inspection technology.
This state-of-the-art system quickly became the industry benchmark for Container Closure Integrity Testing (CCIT) of BFS containers, setting a new standard for reliability and performance in the global pharmaceutical market.
Introduction of the Ace Track Transport System
In 2017, Nikka Densok introduced the patented Ace Track transport system, designed to deliver smoother, more stable container handling.
This advanced conveying mechanism enabled optimized electrode positioning and stress-free vial transport, resulting in enhanced inspection performance and improved overall system reliability.

Continuous Innovation
Nikka Densok’s commitment to technological advancement has continued into recent years, with several key product developments expanding the capabilities of its inspection portfolio.
In 2018, the HDL series was launched as an offline inspection system compatible with ampoules, vials, and syringes.
In 2019, the compact HDG series was introduced for IV bag leak inspection.
In 2022, the SLD series was released as a next-generation Pre-Filled Syringe inspection system designed to evaluate the critical stopper area.
In 2023, an advanced combination inspection system integrating headspace gas analysis with magnetized metal detection was developed, further expanding analytical capabilities.
